Wrong Side of the Road

Saturday, January 25th, 2014

Hi,Wrong Side of the Road

I am a new Canadian Immigrant from South of Asia. I recently got my Quebec drivers license and to please my wife, I took her on our first ever ride in a rented car, in Montreal.

We went to Ottawa and on our way back, we pulled over a service station for a coffee. When I existed out of the coffee store, accidently I pulled on to the wrong side of the road. For a moment, I forgot I was in Canada where we drive on the right side of the rode, unlike driving on the left side of the road back home. I reached the intersection, the lights turned green and I got on to the right side of the road.

It was dark, and there was no proper lanes drawn on the road. So, it was obvious for any South Asian to confuse.

When we were at the intersection, I observed no cameras, and no cop chased us. Will I still get a ticket for this act? I am so worried. I didn’t do anything intentionally.

Thanks.

Probationary licence quebec

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013
My Granddaughter received her Probationary licence July 2012.   She was issued a speeding ticket in Nov 2012 (2 points) and just received another one April 2013 in Gatineau for going 71 in a 50 KM zone (2 points).
I advised her to plead not guilty to the second ticket to avoid the automatic suspension of her licence.    Still waiting to receive the court date,  is it possible in Quebec (Gatineau) to see someone prior to the court date and ask for a reduction in speed or whatever to reduce the points. SAAQ Late Registration Payment

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013

Hi,

I was late in paying my registration for our two cars this year by about 1 1/2 month. Three days after paying them both off at a bank, my wife was stopped without proof as I forgot to leave the payment stub in her car. While she explained the situation and offered to have me fax the proof immediately to the police, he still issued her a ticket. We call the court and explained the situation and was told that with proof it should be cleared but when I went down to the courthouse, I was told that it is up to the court and proof of payment may not be adequate. The fact that it’s not a clear cut issue is disturbing. So I was was asked to submit proof which I did. But while I was there, I was told after the clerk checked in the system that 3 weeks earlier (before I paid at the bank), the police had spotted my car on the road, noted that the registration wasn’t paid but did not intercept. I was told that they may be sending me a ticket even though they did not intercept. Two months later, I got the ticket which strangely came via a large FedEx cardboard envelope. The questions are: a) can they issue a ticket after the registration was paid even though the bank have yet to process b) can they legally issue a ticket for a traffic violation without intercepting or presenting proof?

Thanks,
Charles

Towed Snow Removal

Friday, February 8th, 2013

Hey !

Im writing you today because my car has been towed on tuesday jannuary 22 2013 around 11 pm !
That day on my  way back home I noticed that I could not park because there were temporary signs (orange) which indicated no parking between 18h and 7h, so I went around the block to find a parking spot and I start driving up Durocher street which is parallel to Querbes Av. and I finally found a place up the street at the corner with Saint Roch. Towed During Snow Removal

Thursday, January 17th, 2013

Dear Sir/Madam;

On the 27th of December , its the day that Montreal was struck by the Snow storm, I drove back from work around 2:15 pm and reached home at 3:00 pm and parked the car on the street (Decarie Blvd). I made sure that there was no signs for snow removal or anything like that. The only sign was there was for parking times. I woke up the next day and found that my car was towed and the orange signs were placed . (more…)

Infraction notice by mail

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012

Hi,

I’m writing on behalf of my father-in-law who received an infraction notice by mail this week ( the week of 21 sept)

It says that his car was parked across our street at 13:38 on august 17th when the time not allowed was between 13:30 and 14:30. He never saw a ticket on his windshield.

Is it normal that he received an infraction notice by mail and not on his windshield? He doesn’t remember if he was parked there or not. What proof does the city have? Can we contest this?

Please let us know what you think.

Thanks, Melissa.

Getting ticket by mail

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012

I would like to tell you the story of Police mailing in a ticket.

In November 2011, I received a ticket by registered mail. I had no idea what this was for since I didn`t get any tickets in 2011. The so-called infraction was for stopping in a no stopping zone in September, two months earlier.

The funny thing was that it was sent to me because the car is registered to me but I never drive it. My wife is the sole driver of that car. She said to me that she was never stopped and told that she had committed an infraction so therefore she can`t remember the actual day this took place on. This is in front of my daughter`s high school and I noticed after this event that this is what they were doing. It appears that the police were taking license plate numbers and just writing up the tickets after and mailing them. (more…)

Parking ticket sent to US address months later

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012

Hi,

I’m in Montreal on a working permit and have my motorcycle with me.  Haven’t driven it this summer, so it’s been parked on the street near my apartment.
A week or so ago my parents received 10+ parking tickets in their mail for my bike dating months back.  Two were valid (parked elsewhere in the city) — they were accidentally thrown out by my room mate when he moved out, so I paid those immediately.  But for the rest, this is the first I knew of them; I check the bike nearly every day and haven’t seen a single ticket either on the bike on on the ground.  Nada.
The other evening, a police officer showed up at my door informing me fairly aggressively of the tickets.
I’d like to resolve this in a sane way.  If I had seen even just a single one of those tickets on my bike, I would have moved it immediately.  Being right next to St. Laurent, I imagine late-night bar refugees think it’s funny to rip tickets off.  10 times.  But to have months of tickets built up like this before I’m contacted in any way just doesn’t seem reasonable.
Anything to be done?  I have until Oct 1st to pay them — so I wasn’t given much time from notice to due-date.

NJ resident and received a traffic ticket in Montreal

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

Hi there,

I was on my way from Montreal to New Jersey on July 3, when I was pulled over for crossing a solid line. I was supposed to take an exit on the right and my GPS messed up, ended up recalculating and at the last moment asked me to take the exit. I followed the traffic moving straight and crossed over the solid line to take the exit. There was a cop on his motorbike (who had already pulled one over) and asked me to pull over. He handed me a ticket for 277$/3 points and asked me to pay the ticket within 30 days.

I was wondering what options do I have to fight the ticket. What would happen if I not pay the ticket? (I am sure that a warrant will be issued on my name and I wont be able to drive in Canada). Is it advisable for me to plead non guilty and write an explanation as to what happened. I would hate to drive to Montreal again and stand in court.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for reading.

Ticket for crossing a solid line

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

Hi,
I just received a ticket for crossing a solid line  at the intersection of rue Valiquette and boul. Pitfield  where the ultramar gas station is located in ville St Laurent. I made the stop on the stop sign and waited to turn right onto Pitfield. Kinda confusing this intersection, I think.

The cop said I was there stopped,  impeding the other vehicles which weren’thonking because of the police car being present.!!!! (more…)
